Noongar Bush Tucker & Bush Medicine Workshop
What a fantastic turnout to the Noongar Bush Tucker & Bush Medicine Workshop held in collaboration with our friends at Harvey Community Resource Centre.
Over 30 people from all over, from Perth to Bunbury, even Melbourne and Canberra, came together to learn more how to use native plants for bush food and medicine.
To deal with ailments, Noongar people have always used a range of remedies, which included medicinal plants, steam baths, clay pits, charcoal and mud, massages and secret chants. Noongar people also lived on a wonderful larder of fresh fruit, vegetables and lean meat, in a land largely free from disease, with more exercise, less stress and supportive communities.
This workshop provided an overview of commonly used trees and plants that continue to be used in the treatment of aches, pains, burns, colds, rashes, stings, bites and wounds; as well as commonly used proteins, trees, plants, shrubs and herbs that continue to be used to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
The Harvey CRC’s Undercover Area was the perfect place to hold this workshop, allowing activities to occur outside whilst protecting participants from the elements. Thank you to Tracey-Ann and the team at Harvey CRC for their hospitality and ongoing commitment to the Harvey community.
This workshop was part of the Noongar Waangkiny (Language) & Culture Program made possible through the generous support of Lotterywest.
