Successful Grant Application: Strong Spirit Strong Mind Youth

Harvey Aboriginal Corporation (HAC) was successful in its grant application to the Mental Health Commission Strong Spirit Strong Mind Youth Project Community funding program. This grant supports culturally secure initiatives, events and programs that target Aboriginal young people (aged 12 to 25 years) by improving their social and emotional wellbeing, and increasing their awareness and knowledge of the risks associated with alcohol and other drug use.

Funding of $29,975 has been approved to deliver the Korijekup Keyen Moort (One Harvey Community) project. HAC will use the funds to immerse young Aboriginal people in their culture, language, art, food, stories and community to strengthen their sense of identity, self-worth and belonging. The project will include:

  • Numerous return to Country camps with traditional storytelling, food, art, artefact making and bush tucker/medicine walk on local Bindjareb Country; and

  • Three commUNITY camps with outdoor recreation challenges to develop leadership, team building, problem solving, resilience and communication skills; healthy eating; meditation/mindfulness and physical activity clinics; life skill lessons such as cooking and sewing to promote independence, sustainability and skill development; engagement workshops; art sessions; and yarning circles.
