Cultural Conversations with Pop Greg

Cultural Conversations with Pop Greg

Noongar people have been using yarning circles for thousands of years. Yarning was, and still is, a conversational process that involves the telling of stories as a way of passing on cultural knowledge. These circles provide a safe place for all to speak without judgement. The conversations within a yarning circle have always focused on strengths and not problem solving and criticisms. It is a collaborative way to communicate and provides a respectful place to be heard and to respond. Today, they are used as a meeting place for both communities of all backgrounds to come together.

This session will focus on Noongar Culture and may include topics including Family Kinships, Stolen Generation, Local Stories, Spirituality, Six Seasons and Language.

Thank you to Shire of Harvey and National Indigenous Australians Agency for supporting this event.

ARTefact Workshop

ARTefact Workshop

Since the Nyittiny or the beginning of time, Noongar people have shaped and formed the culture of our boodja (land), and in our contemporary society, employ the arts as a way of continuing to influence how we see our environment, our history and ourselves. Noongar people also made wood and stone tools and used different shaped tools for specific purposes. We are fortunate enough to be surrounded by the materials and resources needed to continue crafting tools and weapons such as spears, axes and carrying vessels.

This workshop will provide attendees with an overview of the meanings of common symbols and markings used in artwork before engaging participants in the creation of individual message sticks or a group artwork. It will also include an overview of traditional tools and a display of authentic artefacts.

Thank you to Shire of Harvey and National Indigenous Australians Agency for supporting this event.

Starry Skies

Starry Skies

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been observing the skies for millennia. It is where ancestral beings exist and observe. It is both a map and guide to navigation, seasons and cultural practice. Come join the Nearer to Nature SW team, Harvey Aboriginal Corporation and the Astronomical Society of the South West for a night under the stars, sharing, listening and learning about the night sky from each other.

This is family friendly event where we can all learn more about how the sky connects to the land. Bring your camp chair and blanket and enjoy a night of story-telling with local traditional owners around a campfire with damper before being guided by members of the Astrological Society to get a closer look at the night sky with telescopes.

The activity will run for approximately 2.5 hours. Dress appropriately for the weather. BYO camp chairs and blankets if its cool. Bring a torch.
